This Bead Head "Flash" Caddis is a basic, yet wildly productive attractor style caddis larva.
This fly seems to have been invented by just about everybody and it goes way back. It was originally called the "Flashabou" Caddis and our own Brian Flechsig used it, and still does, here on the Mad River. This fly is featured in his book on the river. Our good friend and guide Jerry Darkes also has a version called the Darkes Elk Creek Caddis that he and other guides use extensively for steelhead as well as trout. The current version that we sell here is from Pacific Fly Group and is marketed under Jerry's name.
The original in Brian's book was tied with Flashabou Dubbing. Jerry's version was tied with Lite Brite dubbing (which is no longer) and these days the fly is featured here with Ice Dub.....which works better than the others anyways.
These flies are tied on heavy curved nymph hooks and feature a black bead. Sizes 12 and 14.
