The Airflo Polyleader Light Trout Slow Sink in the 5' version featured here for line weights 1-4.
The Airflo Light Trout Polyleaders may well be some of the best leader butts made. These things are so easy, long lasting, and wildly effective. These come in a variety of different sink rates to cover any level of the water column.
These are sinking "butt sections" to which you simply add tippet, or a transition piece and then tippet. They are 5' in length and feature a welded loop on the butt end so that you can easily attach to your fly line via loop-to-loop connection. The Light Trout versions here feature a thinner mono core and are best suited for line weights 1-4wt or where thin diameter tippets are needed.
* 5' Polyurethane, tapered butt section. Just add tippet! (or transition and tippet)
* Superior turnover
* Long lasting
* Will turn over tippets from 2-12' (mostly recommended is 2-4')
* No water spray or retention
* Ready looped on the butt end for attaching to fly line
* Mono connector for attaching the tippet in a variety of ways
* Non-toxic- polyurethane
* Slow Sink version here which sinks at 2" per second
* Leader color is Green
The Light Trout Polyleaders here have an exposed mono "connector" on the front end of 2X or .009". You can either tie a perfection loop in the end of this and go straight to tippet, or blood knot or surgeons knot a transition piece and then loop the tippet. Really best to tie a loop here at some point to avoid cutting back this exposed connector. We much prefer the mono to mono connection here over a tippet ring.....by a longshot!
For tippets of 3X or 4X you should be able to go straight from connector to tippet. For thinner tippets, it is really best to tie a 1-2' piece of "transition" and we usually go 3X or 4X and then loop-to-loop for the final, thinner diameter, say 5X, 6X or 7X. For most smaller streamers of course, you would go straight 3X or 4X.
***It is recommended that you don't go any heavier than 8lb breaking strength on any connector or tippet piece to avoid potential breaking of the butt section itself. These light trout versions are certainly therefore best with tippets of 4X and thinner.
